The Perfect Laundry Nook

For those that do not have an actual laundry room in their home, but want a washer and dryer in their unit, a laundry nook may be the perfect solution. In the Chicagoland area, it may be difficult to have enough space for a laundry room, or to even have a washer and dryer in the home. Fortunately, you can build a laundry nook in almost any part of your home, as long as you have enough floor space for one unit.

Stack the Appliances

One of the smartest ways to save space with your laundry nook is by stacking your washer on top of your dryer (or vice versa). You’ll need to place a board above the bottom unit, and make sure it is sturdy with the correct materials. If you aren’t confident in doing this, either see if a friend can do it or hire someone! You can also use two layers of wood to feel more confident about the sturdiness of the stacking. You will want to have a wood frame around the stacked appliances, with room on the right side of the units for storage.

Organization

Once you have your wood frame around the stacked appliances, you’ll want to fill up the space next to the units. Next to the washer, we recommend placing shelves where you can put containers to hold laundry detergent, stain remover, dryer sheets, and more. Next to the dryer, you can hang a makeshift rod to hold clothes that need to be line dried. However, keep in mind the weather if your laundry nook is in your garage; if it is too cold out, bring your line-dry clothes inside so they do not freeze!

Decorate

After the frame and organization is completed, you can work on making your laundry nook pleasing to the eye. Choose bright paint colors to paint the wood around your nook, and try to choose a stainless steel model for your washer and dryer. A colorful or printed rug will look great in front of it, especially if your nook is on concrete or hardwood floors. You can also label your containers with chalkboard stickers and chalk if you want!
