A LEADING GARAGE BUILDER IN CHICAGOLAND, ILLINOIS

Cleaning Your Garage Floor

Posted on April 17th, 2018

You likely park your car inside of your garage, making the garage floor susceptible to oil leaks and stains. Our Chicago garage builder wants your garage to be clean functional from the inside-out. Here are some easy steps to ensure your garage floor is looking and functioning its best.

Oil and Grease Spots

Use sawdust or cat litter to cover the stains, as they help absorb any leftover liquid. Then, use a broom to clean up the residue. Dishwasher detergent or a concrete cleaner will help lift the stain, but make sure you let it sit for at least 45 minutes before pouring boiling water on the stain. It may take some forceful scrubbing to get rid of the stain, but the end result will be worth it! If the stain doesn’t come out after completing these steps, you can try using muriatic acid and a pressure washer to lift the stain.

Rust Stains

These are another common issue that appears on garage floors. To get rid of rust spots, combine one ounce of trisodium phosphate (TSP) with one gallon of hot water and scrub the spot with this solution. Let it soak into the ground for around 15 minutes before rinsing it.

Filling Cracks

With time, your garage floor may develop unwanted cracks in the concrete. To fill them, use an epoxy paste and scrape the excess away so the ground is level. You may want to lightly sand the dried paste to create a smooth finish.

Use this as a starting point to make sure your garage floor is clean and well-kept. If you have more questions about garage maintenance, our Chicago garage builders are happy to answer your questions.
