When you are buying your first home, sometimes it is hard to know what to look for and what to avoid. Your first home will always be special to you; you should make sure that it is what you are looking for, but you also need to be aware of how the seemingly perfect home could be a mistake. Many commit home buying mistakes out of eagerness to buy their first home or being unaware of what to look for.

Structure
: Anybody can make a home look nice with a fresh coat of paint or decent lawn care. However, when you consider the home without any furniture, or after the lawn hasn’t been mowed, would you still want to live there?

Systems and Appliances
: One of the main parts of your home you need to take into consideration are the appliances. If the oven, refrigerator, and more are older, assume they will need replacing in the near future. In addition, you’ll want to know about the heating and cooling system and the water heater. Is the heat gas or electric? Has the water heater been replaced as of late? All of these things will affect bills that are separate from the cost of your home.

Roof and Windows
: The condition of the roof and windows will tell you a lot about your home. If they are in good shape, with no shingles missing on the roof and solid insulation for the windows, the previous homeowners likely took good care of their home. Signs of roof damage (or water damage) are huge red flags. You’ll want to steer clear of homes that exhibit problems with the structure, unless you are looking for a fixer-upper.
Buying your first home is an exciting process. However, it is important to understand certain home ownership red flags. Nothing is worse than making an investment and then needing to spend even more money to fix it up.
